While we’re on the topic of comfort, let’s talk about the cabin. I thought that was lame at first, but after spending a few long highway stints in relaxing silence, I figured it was a worthy compromise. Ironically, the RS 6 has such great sound isolation that you have to put the windows down to really get your money’s worth.

Our tester was equipped with the $1000 sport exhaust option and made a great V-8 noise at full tilt. The 591-hp twin-turbo V-8 under the hood rockets you down the road with brutal immediacy, displaying nary a hint of lag or hesitation. While it may be the least powerful of Germany’s fast-wagon trio on paper, it doesn’t feel slow. Like most Audis, the RS 6 shines brightest in its brutal acceleration and massive speed. You get used to it, but it’s never as truly engaging as a truly dedicated sports car. It really does feel like you’re pointing a big weight on the nose around corners, and it’s not exactly satisfying. Picture a Porsche 911 Carrera 4 drivetrain flipped longitudinally.Īudi’s done a good job using suspension tuning and torque vectoring to mitigate this layout’s weird weight distribution, but it’s still noticeable, especially in the steering. Most big Audi four-doors have their engines fully in front of the front axle line to allow the Quattro system’s transaxle to fit, and the RS 6 is no different. What do I mean by that? Well, from the first corner, you can feel just how far in front of the front axle the engine is. But it drives essentially the same as any other modern Audi. I won’t go as far to say that this is a case of don’t-meet-your-heroes, because the car is excellent fun. I suppose you’re probably curious to know how the RS 6 actually drives. You quickly begin to feel like the King of the VW Group when you’re behind the wheel.

While driving down an avenue in New York City I drove past a parked Huracán and I swear the driver glanced over.

Volkswagen, BMW, Porsche, and Mercedes drivers were all equally excited to see an actual RS 6 Avant on the road. I’ve gotten less attention in McLarens.Īnd it wasn’t just Audi die-hards pausing their days to get a better look. In one instance I was exiting a busy highway when a driver in an RS 3 sedan came to a stop in an adjacent lane just to get a better look at the car, nearly causing a collision. I only had the car for a weekend and I couldn’t believe just how many people, both on the road or simply walking down the street, would stop to gawk. And because it’s so rare to see a sporty, aggressive wagon stateside, people can’t help but stare. Outfitted with the Black Optic package, which gets you 22-inch matte titanium wheels and fully blacked out grille, it’s hard to miss. One look at our Tango Red Metallic RS 6 test car will help you understand why. The greatest joy is in how everyone reacts to seeing it on the road. While the RS 6 is endless fun to drive, that’s not the most entertaining thing about the car.
